The Ninja Turtles franchise never completely left us. Beyond their awful movies and other questionable adaptations, every time Leonardo, Michelangelo, Donatello and Raphael come back, they inevitably get our attention. One of the best ways to develop their adventures is through video games, and that brings us to TMNT Rescue-Palooza, a free game made by fans that sends us back to that glorious era of Super Nintendo and Mega Drive titles. The original Ninja Turtles games were hard. The PC port was so badly made that they made a design error and made it impossible to beat. Then came the Super Nintendo and Sega Mega Drive versions, drastically optimizing the profile of our favorite anthropomorphic ninjas. The latest games weren't as good, and somehow the turtles ended up in the Fighter Pack 3 of Injustice 2.
If you want to go back to better times, the good news is that you don't have to. Thanks to the excellent work of modder Merso-X, today you can download a copy of TMNT Rescue-Palooza and enjoy a huge dose of beat 'em up without emulators or weird hacks.

Now, the truth is that calling it a fan game doesn't do it justice. TMNT Rescue-Palooza includes 17 levels, four bonus stages, vehicles, 60 characters (of course, you'll have to unlock some), several graphics options (although I recommend using OpenGL without filters for a more "arcade" look), and most importantly: local cooperative mode for four players.
Seeing four people hitting things in the TMNT arcade was a real show, and you can do the same at home with four gamepads. Do you prefer to play alone and with a keyboard? Nothing stops you, but the game will be harder without company.
All that's left for me to say is hurry up and download it (compatible with Windows, 158 megabytes) before the copyright hawks start circling the area. So far I haven't heard any news about Merso-X having problems with his tribute games (ThunderCats and Power Rangers are still there), but these people strike treacherously, when you least expect it. Remember Mario Royale? Its creator was forced to remove it...
