Snapcraft listed warty-prototype as a standalone Ubuntu launcher design prototype on October 22, 2026. The listing gives version 0.1.0, revision 2, on the unstable latest/edge channel. It is a design demo, not an announced Ubuntu desktop feature.
What the AI scenarios do
The prototype simulates three AI-style tasks: matching the desktop’s appearance to a photo, finding an app to open a file, and turning clipboard contents into a visit plan. Snapcraft says each action produces a desktop notification describing what would have happened rather than changing the computer.
The launcher also demonstrates conventional tasks such as searching modes and emoji, pinning files, and finding open windows or browser tabs. Those examples sit alongside the simulated AI scenarios; they do not make the scenarios operational.
How to install the experimental Snap
Snapcraft’s installation section refers to Ubuntu 16.04 or later and requires Snap support to be enabled. It gives this command:
sudo snap install warty-prototype --edge
The package is listed on the unstable edge channel, which Snapcraft warns could break or change often. The Snapcraft package listing has the version and installation details.
Window behavior in Wayland sessions
Clubic reports that XWayland lets the demo position its window in the upper-right corner. In a pure Wayland session, the demo runs but cannot place the window there.
