The latest Google I/O was basically reduced to two words: artificial intelligence. One of the new features is the arrival of "Overviews", which inject generated (and unwanted) answers into the results. But the Mountain View giant also introduced a revolutionary feature that could forever change the way we search: Show links... and nothing else. How do we access that pure "Web" mode of Google Search? The folks at Tedium give us an option with their new portal, Udm=14.
Actually, the official route to access this "un-junked" Google was shared by Danny Sullivan, official liaison and communicator for Google Search. All we have to do is start the search, then click "More", and finally choose the "Web" option. However, repeating this process for every search becomes tedious in record time. End users will forget it, and Mountain View will have a reason to send it to its grave. That's where Udm=14 comes in.
Udm=14: Cleaner Google Searches
The expression &udm=14 is nothing more than the shortcut to activate that Web mode. For example, if we use https://www.google.com/search?q=%s&udm=14 as an alternative search engine in our browsers, its results will always be clean, that is, limited to links. No images, no videos, no delusional AI expressions.
The Udm=14 portal from Tedium goes a step further, offering directly a frontend to replace Google on our home page. The difference is... notable. It's like using the Google of last decade, with 2024 results. Of course, blogspam and junk links are not going anywhere with this, but it's much better than the default experience.
Will it last? We don't know. Can Google change its mind? Definitely, and it has done so before. Some things disappeared from Mountain View just because they were too useful (YouTube Go comes to mind), and its current obsession with AI raises many doubts. For now, take advantage.
