I've mentioned it several times, but for consistency I'll say it once more: The file search in Windows 10 is very deficient. Between the indexing process that cripples hard drives and its natural performance problems, users have experienced a clear deterioration in the quality of their searches. As always, we wait for Microsoft to improve this situation with the next major update of the operating system, but if you want to fix it now, you can download a copy of UltraSearch and completely replace the standard search.
Microsoft still needs to optimize several aspects of Windows 10. At the top of the list... Windows Update, hotfixes that continue to break installations, and the entire Windows-as-a-service model. Its memory management is far from ideal (causing issues even in games), and it also cannot efficiently control processors with a large number of cores (e.g., Threadripper). Add to that the lack of links in some settings sections, the installation of unwanted applications, and obviously, the search results. The internal file search is... bad, and we have recommended replacing it on more than one occasion. First it was SearchMyFiles, then we talked about CSearcher, and today it's UltraSearch's turn.
How to search files faster with UltraSearch
UltraSearch is a development of JAM Software, has a portable edition, and is available in both 32 and 64 bits. At first glance, you can see it's a much more advanced search tool compared to what Windows 10 offers. UltraSearch allows us to extend the search to multiple drives simultaneously, apply specific exclusion filters, and sort results by different parameters, including file attributes. When you click on a file, UltraSearch shows a preview on the right side of its interface with additional technical details, and thumbnails if it's a compatible format (e.g., JPEG images).
Among the advanced options of UltraSearch, we discover keyboard shortcuts, opening the program with Windows startup, two entries for the context menu, and the possibility to skip User Account Control warnings. Finally, UltraSearch supports saving and printing search results. The latest version of UltraSearch is 2.3.2, published yesterday. Feel free to download the portable build and try it.
