Valve’s September 14, 2026 update for Half-Life: Alyx lays the technical groundwork for standalone play on Steam Frame. It adds an ARM64/AArch64 build, gaze-directed foveated rendering and depth-aware reprojection, while also improving desktop performance and fixing several Linux and gameplay issues. It does not add a new campaign or other playable content.
Valve prepares Half-Life: Alyx for Steam Frame
The headline change is architectural. Half-Life: Alyx now includes the support needed to run on Steam Frame’s ARM64/AArch64 platform rather than relying solely on the game’s existing PC path.
That matters because Alyx was built as a demanding PC VR title. Bringing it to a standalone headset requires more than lowering a few graphics settings: the game needs to work with a different processor architecture and make better use of limited mobile hardware. Valve’s update addresses that foundation directly.
The same update also removes one tick of latency from player hands and other simulated objects in the desktop version. Valve lists fixes for a false low-memory warning, Linux cloud-save and subtitle problems, main-menu flickering, and an interaction bug that could appear after starting a new game.
What ARM64 support changes
ARM64, also called AArch64, is the 64-bit processor architecture used by Steam Frame. In practical terms, the update gives Half-Life: Alyx a native code path for standalone operation on that headset’s hardware.
The port is designed to keep the original game rather than replace it with a stripped-down mobile edition. Its original textures and game objects remain in place, and Steam Cloud synchronizes saves between the PC and standalone versions. That approach also aims to preserve compatibility with Steam Workshop mods and campaigns instead of forcing a separate, reduced content ecosystem.
The compatibility goal is significant for Alyx. The game’s appeal is not limited to its main campaign; Workshop content has become part of the experience for many players. Preserving the same underlying objects and assets gives that ecosystem a better technical starting point than rebuilding the game around simplified mobile assets.
Foveated rendering and reprojection explained
Standalone Steam Frame play adds foveated rendering, a technique that concentrates the highest rendering quality around the area where the player is looking. Areas outside the center of gaze can be rendered with fewer resources, leaving more processing capacity for the scene itself.
Steam Frame’s eye tracking is described as sampling the user’s gaze about 80 times per second. That tracking is the input for the gaze-directed rendering system; it is not the same thing as streaming a PC image to the headset.
The port also uses depth-aware reprojection. A reported operating mode renders Half-Life: Alyx at 36 frames per second and presents the result at 72 Hz. Reprojection generates an intermediate frame between rendered frames, using depth information to place nearby and distant objects more accurately than simple image interpolation.
That distinction matters in VR. The headset can present a 72 Hz display rhythm even when the game’s underlying renderer produces 36 frames per second, but the two figures describe different stages of the pipeline: one is the game’s render rate, and the other is the display presentation rate.
The visual trade-off with PC VR
Standalone play changes the convenience equation, not every aspect of image quality. A powerful gaming PC and higher-end PC VR headset can still offer sharper images, higher refresh rates and richer OLED color than Steam Frame’s standalone mode.
Steam Frame’s display is described as 2,160 × 2,160 pixels per eye, and the headset has 16 GB of RAM. Those specifications support the standalone design, but they do not turn mobile hardware into a desktop-class graphics system. The port’s strategy is to combine ARM64 support, gaze-directed rendering and reprojection so that demanding Alyx scenes can run within that hardware envelope.
No new Alyx campaign in this update
The update is about technology, not new story content. Half-Life: Alyx receives no new campaign, levels or other playable material in this release.
For existing players, the practical additions are the standalone architecture, the rendering tools and the underlying performance work. The game remains the same Alyx experience, with the technical changes aimed at making it possible to run without a connected PC on Steam Frame.
In the United States, Steam Frame is listed at $1,059 for the 256GB model and $1,299 for the 1TB model. The headset’s price is therefore part of the standalone decision, while the Alyx update itself is a software and engine milestone rather than a new game release.
