Valve’s SteamOS issue list includes issue #2955 on October 21, 2026. The complaint concerns a Steam Deck owner who, according to Mixed News, saw a black screen after installing SteamOS 3.9.3 beta on a dirlock-encrypted home partition.

What the owner reported

Mixed News reported that the password prompt for the encrypted partition appeared briefly, then the screen went black and stopped responding. The owner filed the issue on October 19. Valve’s SteamOS 3.9.3 notice, published October 16, identifies the update as a Beta and Preview release.

The warning named a specific build

Dirlock developer Alberto Garcia warned users of dirlock against installing SteamOS 3.9.3 build 20261015.100 from the Beta or Preview channels, Mixed News reported on October 17. Garcia said the regression could prevent the system from booting and would be fixed in a future update.

Mixed News also reported two individual recovery outcomes: one owner returned to SteamOS 3.9.2, while another regained access over SSH.
