On Oct. 16, 2026, Verizon announced that iPhone Handoff would cost $10 per month for compatible iPhones running iOS 27, and described the service as coming soon. The carrier named iPhone Duo and iPhone 18 Pro as examples of compatible models and said users would retain access to Verizon’s 5G network when switching phones. Verizon’s announcement covers the U.S. service.

How the shared number switches phones

Apple says Handoff keeps the number active on one iPhone at a time. Unlocking the other iPhone switches the number to that device; the two phones do not use it simultaneously. Apple’s Handoff guide also explains what moves with the active phone and what you need to set up the feature.

Calls, voicemail, iMessage, RCS, SMS/MMS and Find My location move to the iPhone in use. Other iCloud-synced data updates across devices, while third-party apps follow their own syncing behavior. Some apps may sign you out on one phone or ask you to approve the second device.

What both iPhones need

Apple requires two iPhones running iOS 27 or later, connected to Wi-Fi and signed in to the same Apple Account. Messages in iCloud must be enabled, and FaceTime and iMessage must use matching sign-ins. The phones also need carrier eSIMs, and the carrier must support Handoff.

For Dual SIM, Apple says both eSIMs must be from carriers that support Handoff. Unlocking the other phone switches both numbers together.

Apple Watch and turning Handoff off

Handoff does not move an Apple Watch to the other iPhone. Apple recommends pairing the watch with the iPhone you use most often. To turn Handoff off, contact your carrier; deleting the eSIM alone may not stop charges.
