The decisions that major browser developers are making for the mobile space aren't all good. Their solutions feel increasingly slow and heavy, ruining the experience in environments that need to be extremely fast and dynamic. If you think your mobile browser is dragging its feet for some reason, you might want to try a copy of Via Browser, which leaves a lot of the bloatware aside and incorporates very interesting advanced features.
It doesn't take much effort to verify that the technical specifications of mobile devices keep increasing with each new generation. These extra resources allow developers to create more complex apps, but that trend inevitably causes performance issues on humble devices. Mobile web browsers top the list, and after seeing official options like Chrome and Edge on some smartphones, I imagine many users are interested in finding a lightweight alternative. That brings us to Via Browser, a browser that has been with us for seven years, has more than ten million downloads, and maintains compatibility with very old versions of Android.
Via Browser, a lighter alternative for browsing on Android
The browser doesn't have a traditional speed dial, but it's very easy to access the bookmarks section and explore history. We also find an incognito mode, a direct shortcut to request desktop versions of websites, a module that modifies the user agent on the fly, and a resource detector that can facilitate certain downloads depending on the site.
The general settings section includes a long list of options, from the home page and search suggestions, to the exact location for downloads, the download manager, and the external player. The customization parameters in Via Browser are very extensive, but if that's not enough, the browser offers support for Greasemonkey-style scripts. Its installation is a bit awkward, however, I don't recall a similar feature in another mobile browser.
