How to find out a video's codec

At the bottom you'll see a video box that reports codec, resolution with its format and FPS, and an audio box that reports the codec and the number of channels (for example, 5.1 audio appears as "6 channels"). The rest of the information will depend on each codec, and the download button is just a shortcut to Google that searches for its ID. Another option is to go to the Codecs section and click Download Codecs, which will take you to codecsdb.com (with error 500 at the time of writing).
Another useful aspect of VideoInspector is that it can present a list of the codecs already installed in the operating system, but its secondary functions (recording DVDs or changing the FourCC sequence) require additional downloads. The only major problem with VideoInspector is that it doesn't work with MP4 videos. The only supported container formats are AVI, Matroska (MKV), MPEG I, MPEG II and QuickTime.
