VirusTotal Uploader: How to Analyze Files on VirusTotal from Your Desktop
Analyze files in VirusTotal

Even though it is not designed to replace local security solutions, VirusTotal has become a very valuable resource when it comes to analyzing the malicious profile of any file. The normal procedure requires visiting its page to upload each element manually, however, the open-source application VirusTotal Uploader offers us a drag-and-drop interface, which presents the results directly in a browser tab.

VirusTotal is a tool we use frequently here at NeoTeo. If a program or script has something slightly suspicious, a quick study on that service will tell us everything we need to know. Using the official site is not complicated, but there is some interest in automating or simplifying the analysis. VirusTotal recommends tools like the VT4Browsers extension to process links, but there is also the possibility of working from the desktop, and so we come to VirusTotal Uploader.

You must obtain an API key by creating an account at VirusTotal. The process is simple.

VirusTotal Uploader is not an official application, but an open-source development that seeks to replace the old desktop app of VirusTotal, which no longer has support. The first step to use it (whether the installable version or its portable edition) is to create an account at VirusTotal, in order to obtain an API key. Fortunately, the process is very simple: Name, username, email address and password, or as an alternative we can use secondary credentials (Google, Twitter, GitHub and/or Microsoft).

With the generated hashes, the Upload button starts the analysis, but you can disable this requirement and get the results directly

With the API key in our possession, the rest is a matter of copying it into the configuration menu of VirusTotal Uploader, and start dragging files. Nothing more than that, pure drag and drop. A new window will open with the hashes of the file to analyze, and if we click on Upload, the analysis result will appear in a browser tab. If you want to eliminate the Upload step, it is enough to check the Direct File Upload checkbox.

Don't hesitate to drag multiple files at once. Results for each will appear in a tab.

The best part? VirusTotal Uploader supports dragging multiple files at once. Its only technical dependency (besides the API key) is the presence of version 4.6 of the .NET Framework, something that should already be resolved in modern versions of Windows. Download a copy!
