Continuing with the war recommendations, here's a great film by Werner Herzog. It takes place in 1966, during the height of the Vietnam War. Aviation pilot Dieter Dengler (Christian Bale) is shot down in battle, captured by the Vietnamese, and taken to a prisoner of war camp. There he meets others in the same situation and must plan his escape. Based on a true story, Rescue Dawn is a harrowing chronicle. If you want more, nothing better than following up with the documentary Little Dieter Needs to Fly from 1997, also directed by Herzog, which has Dieter telling the whole odyssey in detail.
