Improvised vehicles hacked to the extreme, worn clothes with strange patches and stitches, men turned into scavengers, hunters or warlords, and women as desert owners... or sexual slaves, depending on the cosplay. Between September 25 and 29, the Wasteland Weekend festival took place, inspired by the Mad Max saga and other post-apocalyptic fiction developments. The attendees displayed all their creative arsenal, and the result is an impressive series of images. Would you like to see?
For five days, the public enjoyed live bands, costume/cosplay contests, DJs, Thunderdome-style battles (though I imagine no one ends up dead), and even a post-apocalyptic swimsuit contest. Now, if you're thinking of a chaotic weekend... it's not quite like that.
A Private Event with Strict Rules
Wasteland Weekend is a private event (i.e., you have to pay admission) with a series of very specific rules. For example, you must bring your own alcohol (they don't sell a single beer there), and supposedly they have zero tolerance for drugs. No drones, no lasers (Edwards Air Force Base is very close), no explosives (not even fireworks), no children, no pets. As a themed event, all participants must go in costume. Even photography is limited, and organizers prohibit live streaming.
A Fifth Consecutive Sold-Out
And it's evident that visitors accept these rules. Wasteland Weekend reached its fifth consecutive sold-out, and is already preparing for its 2020 edition. The images we share below are just a taste of what was seen there...
