If you need a free audio editor, offline, and with wide compatibility, you'll most likely visit the Audacity page to get one of its builds. However, there is an alternative: access that same editor in your browser. Wavacity is a port of Audacity especially optimized for execution in Chrome and Firefox, without installing modules or downloading dependencies.
Some applications work much better online, and others develop their full potential when installed locally, but in the end, the only thing that matters is that the user can cover their needs. For example, some swear the local Discord is a disaster and limit themselves to the web version, while others won't change anything on their computer until it appears in the system tray.
However, there's also the possibility that an app finds a certain balance between both modes, and that's where the Wavacity project points. Basically, it's a special port of the Audacity audio editor, optimized for use in the web browser. Audacity is a very lightweight software (its installer doesn't exceed 15 MB on Windows), and this adaptation created by «ahilss» on GitHub requires no additional downloads.
How to edit audio in your browser with Wavacity
If you've had any previous experience with Audacity, then Wavacity's interface will be very familiar. Almost everything is there, from effects to analysis tools, through track controls, the export function, and the menu to enable or disable plugins. The interface language of Wavacity is the same as the browser, but you can change this behavior in the Preferences section, as well as force dark mode and adjust quality parameters.
Now, this doesn't mean that Wavacity is a perfect reproduction. In fact, we didn't have to wait long to find some errors: the most important one appears when trying to use the DTMF tone generator. A simple click on the «Preview» option crashed our browsers equally, Chrome, Edge, and Firefox. Anyway, we won't discard the whole project for a bug or two.
