Just one minute on the internet. That's barely enough time to open an email, check a WhatsApp message, or skim an article summary. Many of us might spend that minute waiting for our connection to finally respond. Yet, the global activity happening online every 60 seconds is staggering. Nearly 200 million emails, 4.5 million YouTube videos played, and about 700,000 hours of Netflix—numbers that only keep climbing.
Think about what you can actually accomplish in a minute. Grab a snack, brew a cup of tea if the water's already hot, make a quick bathroom trip, stretch your legs after a long stretch at the computer—personal wins, but hardly productive. Meanwhile, the web never pauses. In those 60 seconds, Google processes about 4 million search queries, and roughly 390,000 apps get downloaded from major app stores. Curious to see it all? Here's the infographic:
The Internet in 60 Seconds
This infographic comes from Lori Lewis and Chadd Callahan. They compiled activity from billions of users and condensed it into a single minute, using leading online services as reference. It becomes even more telling when compared to last year's edition. Despite privacy scandals and data leaks, Facebook keeps gaining users, registering one million logins per minute. WhatsApp and Facebook Messenger together send over 40 million messages, and about 350,000 people scroll through Instagram.
What about online shopping? In a minute, nearly one million dollars are spent, Amazon and Google ship 180 smart speakers (Echo, Home) to new owners, and music streaming services add 41 new subscriptions.
The infographic also highlights the remarkable momentum of video services. In just 60 seconds, Netflix streams the equivalent of 694,000 hours of content. YouTube videos watched hit 4.5 million, and Twitch's frenzy continues at one million views per minute. When it comes to declines, Snapchat took the hardest hit, with 300,000 fewer snaps per minute compared to a year ago. Twitter's numbers differ between the two charts, and traditional email and text messaging see no radical changes.
