Do you remember 'Fortress'? 1992, Christopher Lambert? One of the characters in that movie was named D-Day, and he had ended up in prison because when trying to blow up a bank vault... he destroyed the money in the process. Something quite different was seen in 'The Score' from 2001, with Robert De Niro and Edward Norton. By filling the safe with water and using a very controlled charge, the safe door flies off, without any damage to the riches inside (and as expected, the MythBusters repeated that scene).
So... safes and explosives. We have the fixed idea, and as we've been able to verify, we're not the only ones. Technically, safes are designed to keep their contents isolated and protected from the outside, but what happens when that “content” is an active grenade? ... I must admit the explosion was more satisfying than I expected. The safe door was ejected at high speed, and without basic protection measures, it could kill a person.
