Why Are Cockroaches So Attracted to the PS4?
It may seem like a lie, but Sony's PlayStation 4 is unusually vulnerable to cockroach infestation. Several specialized console repair services say that most PlayStation 4s they receive contain cockroaches inside (although they also receive Xbox One and other consoles).
According to a technician, several factors contribute to this attraction:
- Most consoles are placed horizontally in dark or enclosed areas, making them inviting.
- The PS4's rear design has wider ventilation grilles, allowing cockroaches to settle in more easily.
- The vents on the bottom provide easy entry.
- The internal power supply makes the console warmer than an Xbox One, creating an ideal nesting environment.
The Dangers of an Infested Console
Cockroach-infested PlayStation 4s are a big problem for two reasons. The first is that it's already disgusting to have your console infested and at risk of spreading to nearby areas.
The second is that it endangers the console's operation. Cockroaches leave droppings that can come into contact with the positive and negative terminals of a circuit, causing a short circuit that can burn the power supply.
How Technicians Fix It and What Sony Says
To solve this, technicians usually replace the power supply; they first take the console apart, sterilize it with an ultrasonic cleaner, and then install the new power supply.
The worst part is that Sony (which has not commented so far) does not accept cockroach-infested PlayStation 4s as part of the warranty.
Preventing an Infestation
To avoid your console getting filled with cockroaches, it's recommended to place it in an open area (not on the floor) and keep the house clean.
