If you look at online statistics, Windows 11 is still far from becoming Microsoft's dominant operating system. However, the gaming universe operates under different parameters, and not a few players accept the "bleeding edge" (and all its whims) to get better compatibility and performance. The Steam hardware survey is an excellent resource that allows us to measure the pulse of gaming, and the most relevant news is that Windows 11 became the preferred system of players.
A quick visit to the StatCounter portal confirms that the adoption of Windows 11 is slower than expected. While Windows 10 records a downward trend, Windows 11 barely managed to break the 30 percent ceiling in July 2024. A combination of artificially high requirements and very questionable design decisions make Windows 11 travel its evolutionary path with the handbrake on fire. In fact, the only good news for the operating system isn't even Microsoft's responsibility, and it comes through gaming.
Windows 11, number one on Steam
In a new update of its "Hardware and Software Survey", the Valve platform presented data for the month of August 2024, and it reveals that Windows 11 x64 came in first with 49.17 percent, jumping 3.36. Windows 10 follows closely with 47.09 percent, and a decrease of 3.07. Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 still have a residual presence on Steam, but together they don't add up to 0.5 percent.
Exploring the rest of the statistics, we find that the 16 GB RAM configuration leads comfortably, registering 47.36 percent, and the most popular graphics card is the GeForce RTX 3060, with 5.36 percent. In terms of VRAM, most users have 8 GB (35.1), followed by 12 GB (18.52) and 6 GB (13.35). Finally, a bit of Linux: The total amounts to 1.92 percent, and if we analyze distros separately, the Arch Linux family leads with 0.16.
