Why do generic Windows keys exist?

A new computer, an empty SSD, a USB stick loaded with Windows, you start the installation… and at a specific point, it asks for the product key. The request is strange these days, almost anachronistic. All you have to do to skip this barrier is click on "I don't have a product key", and the installer will let you continue… but there are some environments where that option does not exist. In other words, you cannot continue without a key, and that is when generic keys come to the rescue.

RTM and KMS generic keys: what are they?

There are two types of Windows generic keys: those with an RTM profile, and KMS generic keys. The former are "Release to Manufacturer" keys, i.e., intended for final retail versions of Windows. The latter are useful for activation environments with a KMS host (Key Management Services), and are formally known as Generic Volume License Keys or GVLK. Microsoft maintains an official page with all valid KMS generic keys, but many editions are missing from its list. Today we will try to fill that gap.

Where are the other keys?

If you need generic keys for other versions of Windows that do not appear here, you have two options. The first is the list published by Jonas Hermsmeier on GitHub. There you will find a combination of RTM generic keys, KMS generic keys, and keys for darker editions like LTSC and builds intended for China.

If you want to try Windows KMS generic keys, there is nothing better than the aforementioned official Microsoft site. That list includes generic keys for Windows Server, and older editions such as Windows 7 and Windows Vista. All KMS keys are Pro, Business or Enterprise, there is nothing for Home or Single Language.

Do these keys activate Windows?

NO. The only effective role of these generic keys is to serve as a bypass during the installation process, nothing more. Activation requires valid keys obtained legally. Falsifying or forcing activation is piracy… and we cannot help you (Redmond gets nervous).

If you use a generic key or skip that step during installation, Windows will not activate. You need a valid key compatible with the edition of the operating system.

That said, using an unactivated copy of Windows is not the end of the world either. The 'demo mode' of the operating system essentially blocks customization options and places a watermark on the desktop. Another option is to join the Windows Insider program and roll the dice with its builds.
