Users of retro computers not only have to deal with the end of official support on older versions of Windows, but also with the disappearance of hotfixes and patches from Microsoft's servers. However, the community didn't stand idly by, and through various projects, its members have managed to restore the availability of those patches. One of the most impressive is Windows Update Restored, which brings back Windows Update support for Windows 9x (95, 98, and ME).
Everyone knows that it's not a good idea to connect to the web with an outdated operating system. Security holes can be very significant in some cases, leading to malware infections, identity theft, and much more. So, why is it so important for the retro community to restore the Windows Update function on older editions of Windows?
Simple: Patches are not only for security; many focus on aspects like stability, compatibility, and performance. For example, try installing Windows 98 SE on VMware Workstation with a modern computer. The first phase proceeds without issues, but after loading the desktop, Windows starts vomiting errors due to the TLB bug. While that was fixed with a community patch, the official hotfixes must be located manually, a painful process no matter how you look at it... but now there is Windows Update Restored.
How to Restore Windows Update on Windows 9x
The Windows Update Restored project has taken on the titanic challenge of restoring the basic and advanced functionality of Windows Update on Windows 9x operating systems, from 95 to ME, and with Windows NT 4.0 included. A similar project called Legacy Update focuses on Windows XP or higher, but Windows Update Restored started from the other end, which is excellent news.
The best part is that its creators don't plan to stop there. The ultimate goal is to restore all major versions of Windows Update, from 3.1 (which is already working) to 6.0, reaching Windows Vista and higher. I decided to test it with Windows 98 SE, and although not all files are available (think of wallpaper packs and other tools), the essential hotfixes installed perfectly.
In summary, if you have a retro computer with a 9x installation (or plan to do one this weekend), you should visit Windows Update Restored. The minimum browser to enter is Internet Explorer 5.0, but the site also offers downloads of IE 5.01, 5.5, and 5.5 SP2.
