We recently explored the virtues of BloatyNosy, an optimizer and cleaner designed for Windows 11. However, the need to remove junk and keep an eye on Windows behavior is not exclusive to its latest version. WinLube supports Windows 11, but it gets along very well with older editions of the operating system, and includes functions to delete temporary files, manage startup programs, defragment drives, and control services.
The 'less is more' strategy remains essential to keep our Windows installations in optimal condition. Removing bloatware, reducing background processes, disabling unnecessary services, and freeing up storage space are very effective tasks, regardless of the Windows version you choose.
While nothing prevents us from doing this manually, the truth is that we can save time and avoid headaches with the help of external tools. WinLube is one of them, having been around for several years. Recently, its developer decided to make WinLube freeware, opening a new opportunity to clean and optimize Windows.
How to clean and optimize Windows with WinLube
The WinLube interface is classic from every angle, clearly inspired by the design of Windows Vista and Windows 7. That is not a limitation: on the contrary, its five categories are intuitive and full of information.
- Start Page provides an overview of the computer's security status, processor usage, and available RAM.
- Clean-Up presents four functions: a cleaner for storage drives, a registry cleaner, a backup manager (for backups created by both tools), and a memory cleaner. The Registry and RAM cleaners have less impact these days, but they could be useful on more modest computers.
- Tuning is the section that houses the startup file defragmenter, the manager of applications that start with Windows, and the services manager (this doesn't seem to work on Windows 11).
- Customize Windows includes security parameters (with UAC and Firewall at the forefront), Windows behavior and appearance, file associations (which we can edit manually), and a menu to modify Windows startup values, like the timeout in seconds or the use of the standard VGA driver.
- Maintenance combines tools of its own and built-in Windows tools, a RAM diagnostic system, a secure file deletion system, and a repairer for broken shortcuts.
Once again, WinLube joined the ranks of freeware in early April, and it seems this will serve as a graceful retirement for the app, but that doesn't diminish its usefulness. Finally, the only technical dependency is an installation of .NET Framework 3.5. Link below!
