The internet is your main ally, and it isn't hard to find good-quality programs. Without going too far, Stellarium appears at the top of our list, but if you want to try something different, all arrows point to WinStars 3, which is easy to use, has updated data, and broad compatibility with major operating systems, both mobile and desktop.
Some stars and constellations are easily recognized. With a little prior training, telling the planets apart in our sky becomes an everyday thing. But if you're determined to explore more deeply, you'll need data. Farther stars, nebulae, galaxies. The final experience depends on your equipment and how friendly your sky is (light pollution ruins everything). However, today you have the privilege of the Web and programs capable of creating a virtual sky updated in real time. One of those programs is WinStars 3.
A detail worth highlighting about WinStars 3 is that its installer is essentially a launcher, and it will download multiple elements from the network to complete its configuration. With a good connection, this process should not take more than two minutes, but if you're currently experiencing download issues, you shouldn't ignore it.
The interface is divided into three bars full of icons. Simply hovering over each one tells you its function. The most relevant bar is the one on the left, as it helps you control the display of constellations, planets, deep-sky objects, and more. You can also toggle the sky colors, horizon, and even clouds. One of the icons in the top bar allows us to modify observation time and exact location, and in the right bar, the most relevant functions are night mode and 3D navigation.
WinStars 3 is available for Windows (from version 7), Android, macOS, and Ubuntu Linux (iOS is still in development). The Linux edition is completely free, but if you want access to all features on Windows, you'll need to pay a basic license of just 6 euros. The sky awaits you!
