There is no point in denying it: Windows is a moving target. Whether it's a fresh installation or an environment a couple of years old, there is always something new to clean, modify, and/or optimize. The Wintoys app points in that direction with an intuitive interface, half a dozen categories with multiple parameters, and a free profile.
Windows maintenance is an ongoing duel, a commitment that has extended for decades. Things have improved in some aspects, but they keep getting worse in others, with bloatware out of control, telemetry, advertising, and security features that directly affect computer performance.
Despite this, our responsibility remains intact. We will always be willing to seek new tools that allow us to optimize Windows with relative ease, and one of the most interesting is Wintoys. Although its availability is limited to the official Microsoft store, the program responds to that leap of faith with a good interface and a healthy list of options.
How to Optimize Windows with Wintoys
Wintoys is divided into six categories:
- Home: Presents general information about the computer, including the number of installed programs, active processes, and resources consumed in real time.
- Apps: Contains Wintoys' app manager, with options to access its real location on disk, search for online data, or uninstall them. The number of actions can vary depending on the type of application.
- Services: Is the equivalent of the services.msc available in Windows. This section reports the status of each service and how it has been configured. We can stop, restart, and change startup profiles with relative ease.
- Boost: Is a glorified tweaks menu. Here you can enable the maximum performance plan, scheduling for graphics cards, and Game Mode, but it also allows us to disable the index, Superfetch, activity history, and virtualization-based security.
- Health: Focuses on parameters like fast startup, hibernation, Windows updates, cleaning temporary files, restarting the graphics driver, rebuilding the icon cache, disk optimizations (like background defrag), and Storage Sense to issue space alerts.
- Finally, Tweaks reaches desktop settings, start menu, file explorer, privacy, advertising, and system.
Wintoys supports dark mode, but the only language available at the moment is English. Once changes are applied, the app will likely indicate restarting the computer. Give it a try!
