The magic of emulators has allowed us to keep alive the flame of old consoles, handhelds, and personal computers. For those who want to follow that path, you can now download the definitive version of the Commodore Amiga emulator: WinUAE 4.0.0.
Fans of retro games and computing in general know the richness of emulators. While physical hardware tends to die, the classic machine can live on by being transported to other platforms. In emulation circles, Unix Amiga Emulator (UAE) is a well-known and respected piece of software, but it is only available for Linux. To not leave Windows users out, there is WinUAE, an adaptation of the UAE emulator that offers the same emulation options. And recently a new version of the Commodore Amiga emulator: WinUAE 4.0.0 was released.
WinUAE 4.0.0 presents several improvements, among which the most notable are: Beam Racing Lagless VSync, which reduces input latency to sub-5ms and replaces the old low-latency VSync; and virtual support for multiple monitors, so each virtual Amiga video output connector can be connected to a separate WinUAE window, emulating real hardware that connects to more than one physical monitor. Other new features of interest include compatibility with the overlay graphics LED (to indicate power or floppy activity) and better compatibility with the fake device controller to provide valid data to programs that request it.
It is also worth adding the following:
- The FPU emulation mode in host mode finally achieves full extended precision (80 bits).
- The debugger supports running Amiga executables from the Shell.
- The hard drive image unit now also supports native drives (motherboard / expansion board) connected via IDE.
- The dynamic adjustment of the fake block size of the directory filesystem hard drive now starts from a smaller disk size.
- The default WASAPI audio device automatically follows the default Windows audio device.
- Possibility to close the confirmation option added to the miscellaneous panel.
- Option added to enable/disable window mode resizing.
Amiga emulation is probably only interesting for users who worked with the personal computer or used it as a hobby in its glory days. The good thing about this new version is that it not only fixes problems of previous versions but also adds many improvements, being also ideal for playing some classic Commodore Amiga games. Developed by Toni Willem, version WinUAE 4.0.0 is now available for free download on Windows (32 and 64 bits).
