Today WordArt feels like a distant memory, as remote as the classic Banner Mania, but if you want to revisit that era without grappling with Microsoft Office, you can access the online version created by developer Mike McMillan. He even took the trouble to recreate Clippy... (!)
I admit I don't have much experience with WordArt. My relationship with the Office suite always leaned toward the formal: word processor, some spreadsheets, and nothing more. My real era of crazy fonts, posters, and strange text effects was with Brøderbund Software's Banner Mania (you might recognize that name from games like Karateka and the Prince of Persia), using a 286 and an old Hercules monitor.
Still, it would be crazy of me to ignore the legacy of WordArt. Anyone who decides to embark on a digital archaeology expedition and use the old version of WordArt doesn't need to dust off a copy of Office. Now, WordArt has a web version.
Make WordArt: Online version of WordArt
The page, named Make WordArt, is a creation of Mike McMillan, and offers a total of fifteen styles. I'm sure our readers will recognize most of them immediately, and they're very easy to use. Everything starts by clicking on the chosen style and entering text. The string can't be too long, but that doesn't prevent repeating the process several times until you complete the phrase. Size and rotation controls appear directly on the text, and once we're done, the main options are four: Download the content as an image, or share it via Twitter, Tumblr, and/or Facebook.
The Make WordArt environment is very similar to what we remember from Windows 95 and older versions of Office. Its developer even took the trouble to recreate Clippy, a small nosy demon and still the most compelling example of how NOT to make a software assistant. Anyone who needs their 20 minutes of nostalgia knows where to find them.
