The original Xbox will turn 22 this coming November. It's one of the best consoles in the retro hardware universe, thanks to broad homebrew support and a huge number of mods. However, it's increasingly hard to find an Xbox in good condition, and that brings us to emulation. The Xemu project just published its latest build, with more than 800 titles in a "playable" state and access to several "exclusives" for the platform.
A quick visit to YouTube will show you everything you need to know to keep an original Xbox in optimal condition. Sadly, many users started their repairs too late and suffered the wrath of capacitors losing electrolytic fluid. Add to that failing optical drives, hard disks with errors (after all, they are IDE units over 20 years old), burned power supplies, and "BIOS rot" in more extreme cases, plus any form of physical damage you can imagine.
In other words, a first-generation Xbox can present plenty of challenges, but if you're only interested in accessing its content, the answer comes through emulation. From a certain point of view, Xbox emulation had a slow start compared with other consoles, but that situation changed completely thanks to Xemu, which took its first steps as a fork of Xqemu and is still in development today. Its latest build was published this past weekend. Why not give it a try?
How to configure and use Xemu, the original Xbox emulator
The tutorial published by Denver Gamer has everything you need, but if you want a summary, here it is:
- Xemu requires three essential files to work correctly. The first one is the MCPX Boot ROM image, named mcpx_1.0.bin, with an MD5 of d49c52a4102f6df7bcf8d0617ac475ed. This wiki points in the right direction.
- The second file is a copy of the BIOS. The problem is we can't use an unmodified retail BIOS, so the best alternative is a debug BIOS or the modified "COMPLEX 4627" BIOS.
- Third, we need a dummy for the hard disk image. This can be legally distributed, so the Xemu documentation section has a copy.
As for the games, I can only say that the images must have the .xiso extension (the rest is up to you). It's also worth remembering that Xemu offers additional options to configure gamepads and increase the internal resolution of games, improving their visual quality. Finally, the list of "perfect" games is limited (34 in total), but there are more than 800 titles with minimal issues that you can enjoy anyway.
