If you never had the chance to play it or you’re looking for a real-time strategy game with science fiction elements, we tell you that you can now download the original StarCraft for free. Blizzard has just released a new patch that includes several improvements to the gameplay.
Most players already own a copy of the first StarCraft, but if you don’t or you’re looking for an old-school RTS, we tell you that you can now download the original StarCraft for free. The game is now officially released in its new patch 1.18, created by Blizzard before the launch of StarCraft Remastered. For now, the game has arrived as a Public Test Realm (PTR) that you can download from the Battle.net forum. You need to create a PTR account to play the StarCraft 1.18 version online, while the campaign can be enjoyed without any hassle.
The full download is just over 1.5 GB, and it comes with support for UPnP, compatibility with Windows (7, 8.x and 10), an observer mode, key rebinding, and fullscreen support. The main advantage is that if you want to play online, you’ll do so on a server in California (since that’s where the PTR server is based). The full release will have support for servers closer to your home, but if you only want to relive the Terran, Zerg, and Protoss campaigns, you won’t have any problems with this new version.
Released in 1998 for Windows and later adapted for Mac and Nintendo 64, StarCraft revolves around three species fighting for dominance in a distant part of the Milky Way galaxy, known as the Koprulu Sector: the Terrans, humans exiled from Earth, capable of adapting to any situation; the Zerg, an insectoid alien race seeking genetic perfection, obsessed with assimilating other races; and the Protoss, a humanoid species with advanced technology and psionic abilities, who try to preserve their civilization and also strictly their philosophy of life from the Zerg.
