YouTube announced Shorts series on October 27, 2026, giving creators a way to organize Shorts into seasons and episodes, with custom thumbnails and sequential playback. The tools are designed to help viewers find a series and continue through its episodes.
How Shorts series organizes episodes
YouTube said creators could use the feature to group Shorts into seasons and episodes. Custom thumbnails help identify a series, while sequential playback lets viewers continue through its installments. YouTube also said Shorts series would create new monetization opportunities for creators.
YouTube describes microdramas as serialized vertical dramas told in fast-paced 60-second scenes. That describes the format, not a fixed episode-length rule.
What YouTube reported about microdrama viewing
YouTube reported more than 6.5 billion microdrama views on YouTube in the first half of 2026. The figure covers microdramas on the platform and is not specified as a Shorts-only total. YouTube also reported more than 50% year-over-year growth in watch time for the format and more than 70% year-over-year growth in microdrama-related views across Asia-Pacific markets.
The platform said 40% of views and 30% of clicks came more than 30 days after a video went live. Those figures describe views and clicks, respectively.
Creator approaches highlighted by YouTube
YouTube profiled Japan’s GOKKO CLUB for vertical-first framing, brand partnerships and stories that introduce an emotional hook within 15 seconds. It described India’s Shorts Break as publishing episodes frequently, building stories around shared experiences and using audience comments to shape future characters and plot points.
A separate plan for members-only episodes
In its October 27 announcement, YouTube described a planned mobile update for members-only episodes. It was intended to let viewers join a channel membership without leaving the episode they were watching.
