Getting free cloud storage isn't simple, and it gets even more complicated when your goal is to store photos while preserving their original quality. However, the folks at Zonerama promise to be the exception to the rule with an unlimited service that includes support for RAW, HDR, and HEIF formats without conversions, plus 4K video, and several security options.
Flickr asks its users a little over $8 a month to access Pro features. Google Photos is tied to Google Drive space, which amounts to 15 GB on free accounts. Either way, the idea is that money changes hands, and many services that once promised free or unlimited storage ended up backtracking.
But the people at Zonerama say they are different. What does it offer exactly? A free gallery with unlimited space to upload all kinds of images, without needing to compress or modify their format. It also enables security measures for better control when sharing material, and support for 4K video.
Zonerama: Unlimited Cloud Space to Store Images
If you don't want to create an account right away, Zonerama has a preview mode that lets you explore its most important features. At the top of the list is compatibility with RAW files. Many photographers use that format for its technical advantages, but with Zonerama they can skip the conversion step. Add the HEIF format, which is gaining ground on mobile devices. Uploading HEIF images is also done directly, without sacrificing quality.
Of course, HDR support couldn't be missing, and free accounts include a basic mode for 4K video, with a five-minute cap. Two additional restrictions are the inability to edit and/or retouch photos in Zoner Photo Studio X, and the block on embedding, so you can't inject images into your website or blog. Both features and unlimited 4K video mode are unlocked with the premium subscription, which costs $6 per month. The big question is: Can Zonerama keep its promise of unlimited space in the long run? Past experiences suggest otherwise, but I'd love to be wrong here.
