Desarrollado con los no videntes en mente, el sistema permite sentir las imágenes mediante su relieve de manera electrónica
Los ingenieros del NIST (U.S. National Institute for Standards and Technology, o Instituto Estadounidense de Estándares y Tecnología) han desarrollado un aparato que permite a los no videntes sentir las imágenes electrónicas. Ésta tecnología funciona mediante un panel con mas de 3000 actuadores que se levantan para crear un relieve a partir de una imagen transferida desde un ordenador. Es parecido al sistema que usan en la película X-Men.
Nuevos progresos desde el primer dispositivo creado en 2002, han llevado a esta tecnología a transferirse a un aparato más pequeño y accesible. Con solo 100 actuadores pero más cercanos entre si se logra una mayor fidelidad en la reproducción. En las fotos se puede apreciar el sistema reproduciendo el contorno de una cara y un mapa de Estados Unidos.
El NIST ha firmado contratos para producir y vender la nueva interfaz. Además de seguir investigando para lograr que la "imagen táctil" sea lo mas fiel a lo real posible.
