Google’s Gemini Apps help page lists Auto model selection for accounts without a plan, with model-access changes starting in October 2026. A report published October 10 said the Auto-only picker had appeared on most of that publication’s free accounts on the evening of October 9, Pacific Time.
How Auto chooses a model
Auto means Gemini selects a model for each prompt. Google says most prompts go to Flash-Lite, while prompts needing deeper reasoning may go to Flash or Pro. So Auto does not mean every prompt uses the same model.
Model access by Google AI plan
Google’s plan table lists these model categories for Gemini Apps:
| Gemini Apps plan | Model access listed by Google |
| Without a plan | Auto model selection |
| Google AI Plus | Flash-Lite and Flash |
| Google AI Pro | Flash-Lite, Flash, and Pro |
| Google AI Ultra | Flash-Lite, Flash, and Pro |
Effort controls are rolling out separately
A separate reported rollout replaces the previous Extended setting with Low, Medium, and High effort levels for subscribers. The options are described as “Quick and efficient,” “Balanced depth,” and “Extra thorough,” respectively.
