Windows updates aren't just a headache for the end user; network administrators constantly struggle to tame their behavior and prevent them from breaking everything in their path.
While there are various resources for hide, postpone, or schedule updates, the program ABC-Update offers all that and more in a clean interface, with a category-based classification system, log generators, and email report delivery.
Windows Updates: What a Nuisance!
One of the weakest aspects across the entire Windows family is updates. There's always that hotfix that slips past quality control and takes down thousands of computers, or the major upgrade that deletes personal files and gets released despite beta testers' warnings.
The vision of "WaaS" or "Windows as a Service" only made things worse, forcing users to become experts at managing updates.
Still, there's no doubt that the story is worse for administrators, since their responsibility multiplies across dozens or even hundreds of computers. That's where tools at the level of ABC-Update come in, a completely free Windows update manager for networked computers.
ABC-Update: Update Management for Networked Computers
Basic configuration requires specifying the source of updates, either Microsoft Update or the WSUS service. Among the supported actions are creating a list of missing updates, a list of all available hotfixes, and installing or uninstalling them (only via WSUS).
When selecting or filtering updates, ABC-Update offers a total of thirteen categories, the most important being "Critical updates" and "Security updates". Other options include filtering by title, and by Knowledge Base number.
Of course, administrators can run all these tasks immediately on the selected computers, or schedule a more suitable date, avoiding usage conflicts.
At the same time, ABC-Update can generate logs and send them via email. Finally, administrators have access to a more advanced version of ABC-Update that does away with the graphical interface and works via command line.
Any additional technical details can be found in the ABC-Update manual (the zip file includes a PDF copy), but it's clear that this is not a tool designed for the end user.
