Meta Account is Meta’s updated system for signing in to and managing selected settings across its apps and devices. Meta announced a gradual transition from Accounts Center on April 23, 2026; on October 27, ABC News reported that some Australians were seeing the update. Meta says people can keep separate Meta Accounts for different apps or devices, so Facebook and Instagram profiles do not have to be combined.
What Meta Account manages
Meta says its central settings include passwords, two-factor authentication, associated email addresses, personal details and ad preferences. Two-factor authentication adds a second check at sign-in. Other controls stay in their apps: Facebook post visibility is managed in Facebook, while Instagram photo tagging is managed in Instagram.
Meta’s illustrated interface puts account settings and profiles in one place. The screen includes categories such as Login and security, Cross-profile experiences, and Ad preferences, alongside a list of profiles associated with Facebook, Instagram, Threads, WhatsApp and Meta AI.
Which apps and sign-in options are included
Meta lists Facebook, Instagram, Messenger, Threads, Meta AI, AI glasses and Meta Quest headsets as supported technologies. WhatsApp is not included by default. It carries over if someone had already added it to Accounts Center, or can be added later. Meta says WhatsApp messages and calls remain end-to-end encrypted, and WhatsApp passkeys are managed separately in WhatsApp.
A shared password is optional. Meta says passkeys, a password alternative for signing in, work with Facebook, Instagram and Messenger, with more apps planned. Meta also describes 24/7 threat protection and personalized Security Checkup recommendations. Parents can manage supervised teen accounts for Instagram, Facebook, Messenger and Meta Horizon through Family Center in Meta Account.
How to keep apps in separate accounts
Meta says users can maintain different Meta Accounts for different apps or devices. ABC News reported this Facebook menu path for moving an app out of a Meta Account: profile picture > Settings & privacy > Settings > Meta Account > Manage account > Manage for the chosen app > Move out of this Meta Account. This changes the app’s account grouping; it does not delete its Facebook or Instagram profile.
Meta announced on April 23, 2026, that the Accounts Center transition would happen automatically and gradually during the following year, with a notification when an account updates. ABC News reported on October 27, 2026, that some Australians were seeing the rollout.
A Facebook Page connection is a separate business feature
Connecting a professional Instagram account to a Facebook Page is a separate setup from grouping accounts in Meta Account. Instagram says the Page connection can enable advertising, message management, cross-app tools and content sharing. It is the relevant connection for those business functions; Meta Account manages sign-in and selected account settings.
Security and privacy concerns
Jennifer Williams, a cybersecurity lecturer at Macquarie University, told ABC News that a breach affecting a unified account could expose messages across connected services and enable impersonation or other misuse. Williams also advised using strong, unique passwords and two-factor authentication.
Ryan Ko, director of the Cyber Research Centre at the University of Queensland, told ABC News that connecting activity across services could create a richer profile of a user. His concern is about the potential privacy implications of cross-service activity.
