Many people still believe that "the truth is out there" and that extraterrestrial technology on Earth is kept hidden by a kind of global conspiracy. But some people, instead of chasing flying saucers, decide to cut to the chase and build one. That brings us to the ADIFO, a Romanian project that seeks to combine quadcopter concepts, jet propulsion, VTOL, independent vectors, and supersonic flight. The phrase "flying saucer" clicked instantly with the public. All arrows point to an old Chicago Sun article published in 1947, and from there it became an obsession. Within less than ten years, the "delirium" of flying saucers found its place even in secret initiatives like Project 1794, and in civilian developments to explore other planets. While nobody denies the possibility that the flying saucer finally escapes its marked "sci-fi profile," the fact is that it needs a very good development, high performance, and economically viable.

The ADIFO: A Romanian Flying Saucer

With that said... let's travel to Romania, where engineers Razvan Sabie and Iosif Taposu presented the ADIFO or "All-Directional Flying Object," a flying saucer prototype with more than two decades of work on its chassis. At first glance it's... a drone shaped like a UFO, but if we take a closer look, we discover some very interesting tricks.

To begin, Sabie insists that the saucer shape is not a whim, but rather based on years of aerodynamic studies with hundreds of pages, computer simulations, and wind tunnels. Its four main motors establish an operation similar to that of a quadcopter, with VTOL capability and low-speed maneuvers. Added to these are two turbines (currently electric fans) with independent vectors at the rear (responsible for horizontal propulsion), and four maneuvering nozzles (two on each side).

Supersonic Ambitions

The final result is a vehicle that can move side to side in any direction the pilot desires, and rotate at high speed in mid-flight. The prototype measures 1.2 meters in diameter, but Sabie believes the ADIFO was "born" for larger scales and supersonic flights. The hypothesis suggests that the saucer shape reduces shock waves on its surface, and enables a much smoother transition from subsonic to supersonic flight. In other words, the ADIFO promises to eliminate the sonic boom.

What's next? More advanced simulations, additional wind tunnel tests, the development of the control system for supersonic flight... and logically, seeking partners. Without a good backing from third parties (both public and private), the ADIFO will be nothing more than a drone-saucer, but we hope it achieves it.
