After the storm created by DALL-E, Stable Diffusion and Midjourney, we have all been waiting for other titans to enter the market of image generation. The doubts about the origin and legality of training models are far from being resolved, but in that chaos appears Adobe, announcing its new platform Firefly. What is different about it? Besides its high level of integration with the Creative Cloud ecosystem, Adobe assures that Firefly is and will be trained using content with the appropriate licenses, or out of copyright.
An old saying goes “better late than never”, but in the algorithmic chaos we live in lately, we are not so sure of its validity. OpenAI dominates the kingdom of chatbots with ChatGPT, while Google races to catch up. In the case of image generation, both DALL-E and Stable Diffusion have shown great flexibility, but if we talk about pure quality, Midjourney is several lengths ahead.
And so we come to an inevitable question: Where is Adobe? The father of Photoshop was one of the first to inject artificial intelligence into its products, and also welcomed AI-generated illustrations into Adobe Stock… but what comes next? The answer is Firefly, a new platform of generative models that will allow us to create images and stylized text (at first) with a simple description.
Adobe Firefly: AI image generation without copyright conflicts
One of the most delicate aspects of AI image generation is the legal one. In other words, the copyright status of each element used in training. But Adobe has no problem discussing the situation of its models for three simple reasons: The images it uses to train Firefly are already licensed, are not copyrighted, or are part of Adobe Stock and have the necessary permissions.
The company also anticipates that it will develop a “compensation strategy” for artists (although that will not happen at first). In addition, there will be a label with the condition “Do Not Train” for those artists who do not want to share their content with model training, and all generated images will have metadata identifying partial or total use of artificial intelligence in their creation.
