Everyone knows that artificial intelligences can be trained to perform unusual tasks, but those involving art are the ones that spark the most interest, especially when there's a way to connect them with the public. That brings us to a portal called AI Gahaku, designed by a Japanese developer we only know as Sato. Its ease of use combined with a pinch of quarantine made the page explode on social media. From nudes to movie scripts, passing through landscapes, award-winning paintings, and even a rap song. Training an artificial intelligence in artistic expressions doesn't make it an expert, but it definitely tries… sometimes with hilarious results. And that brings us to the latest example: AI Gahaku. It's a portal designed by a developer named Sato, and in essence it proposes the following: Load a portrait, and let the AI turn it into a Renaissance painting… or something like that.
With over 650,000 portraits processed (or at least that's what the service suggests), users have spent the last few days (courtesy of quarantine, perhaps?) sharing their results on Twitter and other social networks. The person behind AI Gahaku admits that there is some bias in the generated portraits, as in most cases it insists on 'whitening' the skin. In some instances, the conversion is certainly successful, and it's worth saving the final image. In others, well... it's as if the AI had a neural breakdown halfway through.
If you decide to evaluate AI Gahaku yourself, you should know that its stability is not the best in the world. While we managed to get one or two images, processing errors are the order of the day. At the same time, we don't know how long it will stay online, because Sato depends on donations to keep the server running.
