For a tip-free, open fit, choose AirPods 5; for a sealed in-ear fit, a higher Apple-rated ANC comparison and longer playback with ANC, look at AirPods Pro 3. Apple rates Pro 3 noise cancellation at up to three times that of AirPods 5 under IEC 60268-24 testing, and Pro 3 add workout heart-rate measurement. Neither fit is a universal comfort winner.

Open fit or silicone seal

AirPods 5 sit in the ear without silicone tips. AirPods Pro 3 use an in-ear design and come with five silicone-tip sizes: XXS, XS, S, M and L. That gives Pro 3 listeners more tip sizes to try, while AirPods 5 avoid inserting a tip into the ear canal. Comfort still comes down to how each design fits your ears.

A hands-on reviewer favored Pro 3 for a sealed fit and stronger isolation in noisy surroundings. That’s one listener’s experience, not a promise that either model will feel better for everyone.

ANC, sound and shared audio features

Active noise cancellation, or ANC, reduces outside noise while you listen. Apple’s comparison rates AirPods Pro 3 at up to three times the ANC of AirPods 5 under IEC 60268-24 testing. “Up to” matters: it’s Apple’s qualified comparison, not a guarantee of the same perceived result in every setting or for every listener.

Sound is more subjective. A hands-on reviewer described AirPods 5 as clear, while hearing stronger bass from Pro 3. Both models list Adaptive Audio, Conversation Awareness, Live Translation and Personalized Spatial Audio.

Battery life across three configurations

With ANC on, Apple rates AirPods 5 for up to 4 hours per charge, AirPods 5 with Wireless Charging Case for up to 5 hours, and AirPods Pro 3 for up to 8 hours. Apple separately lists total listening time with the charging case at up to 20, 22 and 24 hours, respectively. The case-inclusive figures are totals, not extra hours to add to each per-charge rating. Actual battery life varies with settings, environmental conditions and use.

Health features and shared hardware

Workout heart-rate measurement is a Pro 3 feature. Apple says it is intended for workouts using Fitness or compatible third-party apps with a supported iPhone. AirPods 5 do not include the heart-rate sensor.

The three configurations share Apple’s H2 chip, Bluetooth 5.3 and an IP57 resistance rating. Those shared specifications sit alongside the key differences: fit, ANC and battery ratings, workout heart-rate measurement, and the features of each charging case.

US launch prices and the case choice

Reported US launch prices were $129 for AirPods 5, $149 for AirPods 5 with Wireless Charging Case and $249 for AirPods Pro 3. These are launch prices, not current checkout quotes.

The $149 AirPods 5 configuration adds wireless charging through Qi or an Apple Watch charger, plus a case speaker compatible with Find My. The base AirPods 5 case charges over USB-C. The Pro 3 case also supports MagSafe, Qi and Apple Watch charging; it has a Find My-compatible speaker and a lanyard loop.

Which one should you choose?

Choose AirPods 5 if you prefer an open, tip-free fit and don’t need workout heart-rate measurement. If you want wireless charging for AirPods 5, the Wireless Charging Case configuration adds that option and one more hour of Apple-rated playback with ANC than the base configuration.

Choose AirPods Pro 3 if you prefer silicone tips, want the higher Apple-rated ANC comparison and longer playback with ANC, or will use workout heart-rate measurement. For comfort, the practical difference is the fit itself: consider which design feels right in your ears.
