On October 19, 2026, American Electric Power (AEP) and X-energy announced an agreement to evaluate a proposed 960-MW nuclear project at the former Breed Generating Station site in Sullivan County, Indiana. Amazon is supporting development under a separate funding agreement and intends to buy power from the project under a long-term contract if it advances.
A 960-MW proposal at the former Breed site
The proposal calls for 12 X-energy Xe-100 small modular reactors, each rated at 80 MW and arranged in groups of four. Together, the units would have 960 MW of proposed capacity. AEP’s Indiana Michigan Power owns the former Breed site.
The companies say the planned facility would supply the regional grid. Amazon says the project is also intended to serve its data centers.
Amazon’s funding and power purchase are separate roles
AEP and X-energy’s agreement covers evaluating the project. Amazon’s separate funding agreement supports development; Amazon also intends to purchase power through a long-term contract that would cover facility and operating costs for the contract’s duration.
That purchase depends on the project reaching a final investment decision and proceeding through construction to commercial operation. The announced arrangement is still at the feasibility-evaluation stage.
In Reddit discussions from Indiana and Fort Wayne, some commenters questioned potential household-bill impacts and corporate safety, while others welcomed nuclear investment and argued that data-center operators should help fund energy infrastructure.
