The way we search on Google has changed, and not necessarily for the better. Users have to battle sponsored links and manipulated results to find what they’re looking for, and sometimes that isn’t even enough. The minds behind the new Andi search engine have a different vision: using artificial intelligence in the search process to free users from the nightmare of links and offer direct answers, without distractions.
One trick that has become very popular for searching content on Google is adding the word “Reddit” at the end. Why? Simple: users want to avoid sponsored reviews, SEO spam, and ratings written by bots and instead read the opinion of a real human being. The new generations of users have quickly recognized this problem, to the point that they already use TikTok as a search engine. Traditional tools aren’t adapting, and to be honest, they work worse and worse.
This is where the Andi project comes in. Its creators describe the situation without filters: Both Google and the link-based search system are broken, and they believe the solution is to implement a more direct conversational model, where the user receives clear answers to complex questions. Andi had its public launch in January of this year, and although it is still in alpha phase, it definitely has our attention.
Andi, a conversational search engine backed by artificial intelligence
The assistant’s invitation is undoubtedly refreshing: the more detailed our question is, the more it can help. In fact, Andi doesn’t even prioritize speed, and instead of chasing links like crazy, it can take up to ten seconds to suggest an answer. The idea is to have a conversation with Andi, an exchange based on natural expressions and concrete results.
The way results are presented also reflects the mindset behind the Andi project. Here, keywords aren’t the priority; it’s the visual interaction, with small snippets of web pages and lots of images. Andi definitely has a TikTok/Instagram/Pinterest essence, and it’s aimed squarely at the so-called Generation Z, or the “under-25” group of users.
The most impressive thing? Andi promises to continue with this new vision of search by applying a free model, without ads or personal tracking systems. Its plan is to offer professional and business plans later, incorporating premium features and API access.
Needless to say, Andi faces a titanic challenge. Google controls 90 percent of the search market, and even Microsoft (burning billions of dollars on Bing) hasn’t managed to put up a decent fight. Andi’s strategy is not to become just another copy. Will it be enough?
