On October 6, 2026, Anthropic announced a public beta of Claude for Google Workspace for paid Claude Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise plans. One add-on installation covers Google Docs, Sheets and Slides, placing Claude in a sidebar alongside the file you have open. Separate beta connectors let you create or edit Google files from Claude chat.

The add-on works on the open Docs, Sheets or Slides file; it is not the same feature as the separate connectors used from Claude chat. Anthropic’s short English-language overview introduces the three-app integration.
What Claude can do in Docs, Sheets, and Slides
Anthropic says Claude can make in-place edits in Docs, such as fixing a sentence or changing a heading’s style. For a larger rewrite, it can present a suggestion card. When an edit is applied through the add-on, it is a direct edit recorded in the file’s version history under the signed-in user’s name—not a Google Docs suggestion.
In Sheets, Claude can write or fix formulas, build pivot tables and native charts, and add tabs. It can also process a selected range in Python for tasks such as joining or cleaning data before returning results to the sheet. Connected Sheets tabs backed by BigQuery are not supported.
In Slides, Claude can create slides using the open deck’s layouts and themes, and flag overlapping, off-slide or hard-to-read elements. Charts it creates are inserted as images, so they will not update when the underlying numbers change.
The add-on and chat connectors work differently
The add-on acts on the single Docs, Sheets or Slides file where you open it. Separate beta connectors let you create or edit Google files from Claude chat, subject to your existing Google sharing permissions. On Team and Enterprise plans, an Owner or Primary Owner must enable those connectors first. They are distinct from the Google Workspace connectors for Gmail, Calendar and Drive.
The add-on is installed through Google Workspace Marketplace, if your Google account and organization settings allow Marketplace apps. A Workspace super administrator can install it for an organization, selected groups or organizational units. Anthropic’s add-on instructions say it requests permission to display third-party sidebar content and to view and manage the specific file where it is installed; it does not request access to Drive, Gmail, Calendar or contacts through the add-on.
Setup, approvals, and practical limits
In Google Docs, Claude is available from the Extensions menu. The menu path is useful to know when you want to open the sidebar in an existing document.
“Ask before edits” is the default: Claude pauses for approval before making ordinary content changes. “Accept all edits” applies those changes without pausing, but adding links, inserting web-hosted images and removing someone’s access still require approval. Claude cannot share files, change ownership or grant access.
The add-on supports Chrome, Edge and Safari; Firefox is not supported for completing add-on actions. Google stops an individual operation after six minutes, and voice dictation is unavailable in the sidebar. The add-on also does not support Connected Sheets backed by BigQuery, or third-party inference through Amazon Bedrock, Google Cloud Vertex AI, Azure AI Foundry or an LLM gateway. Zero Data Retention is not available for the beta.
Data handling and Enterprise controls
Anthropic says the add-on’s open-file content, user messages and attachments are not used to train its models. It says inputs and outputs are deleted from its systems within 30 days, subject to an exception for organizational-data retention. Enterprise controls include the Compliance API, customer-managed encryption keys and OpenTelemetry audit export.
