A report published Oct. 2, 2026, said Apple may be developing a home security camera that analyzes activity on-device and sends text descriptions instead of conventional video. The reported idea differs from HomeKit Secure Video, Apple’s existing service for compatible cameras, which supports live video and recorded clips.
What the report says about Apple’s camera
The reported camera would use on-device AI to analyze activity and send text descriptions of detected events. Those are reported features of a possible product, not specifications for a camera available to use.
Text descriptions versus HomeKit Secure Video
The camera described in the report and HomeKit Secure Video serve different roles. The reported camera would send text descriptions of activity; Apple’s support guide describes a service for compatible cameras that can stream and record video through the Home app.
For HomeKit Secure Video, Apple says camera footage is analyzed and encrypted on a home hub before being uploaded securely to iCloud. The service keeps the last 10 days of activity, and recorded video does not count against the iCloud storage limit.
HomeKit Secure Video camera limits
Apple lists these camera allowances for HomeKit Secure Video by iCloud+ plan:
| iCloud+ plan | HomeKit Secure Video camera allowance |
| 50 GB | 1 camera |
| 200 GB | Up to 5 cameras |
| 2 TB | Unlimited cameras |
These limits apply to compatible cameras using HomeKit Secure Video. Apple’s support guide describes the service and its iCloud+ allowances.
