MacRumors and Reforma reported on October 14, citing Bloomberg, that Apple planned a limited Apple Intelligence rollout in mainland China for December 2026. MacRumors linked the plan to iOS 27.3; Reforma also reported the December target.

What the reported China rollout would include

MacRumors reported that the initial release would offer basic features, including photo editing, while leaving out AI-powered Siri, Image Playground and the newer Genmoji version. Text-generation tools would be limited.

MacRumors also reported that Apple received initial clearance in July 2026 but still needed additional clearance for a consumer launch. It said Apple had partnered with Alibaba and Baidu to meet China’s restrictions on foreign AI, and that Chinese authorities must approve ongoing model updates.

What Apple says about devices and privacy

In its July 7 support guidance, Apple says previously purchased devices that support Apple Intelligence will be able to activate and use it in mainland China once the features become available there. The guidance also says supported devices purchased in mainland China do not currently work with Apple Intelligence. Devices purchased elsewhere also do not currently work when the user is in mainland China and their Apple Account country or region is set to mainland China.

Apple’s September 14 privacy notice describes its general processing model: many Apple Intelligence tasks run on-device, while complex requests may use Private Cloud Compute. Apple says it does not store or access data processed by Private Cloud Compute.
