Apple began rolling out iOS 27 on September 14, 2026, with Siri AI available as an English beta in the United States on supported devices and supported language settings. The update is more than a Siri redesign: Apple Intelligence now reaches Photos, Safari, Shortcuts, Visual Intelligence, Home, writing tools and accessibility features. The catch is familiar but important—what you get depends on your iPhone, language and region.
Siri AI brings personal context and cross-app actions
Siri AI is the headline feature in iOS 27. Apple describes it as a beta assistant that can use personal context from Messages, Mail, Photos, Calendar, Notes and Reminders, understand onscreen content, answer web questions and carry out actions across supported apps.
That changes Siri from a voice shortcut into something closer to a system-wide helper. It can search information scattered across your Apple apps, respond to what is visible on screen and help create or edit content. Apple also adds Write with Siri, which can draft, edit and provide feedback on text; Mail and Messages can adapt suggestions to a user’s writing style.
Apple has also introduced a dedicated Siri app. It synchronizes conversation history across supported Apple devices through iCloud, according to Apple. Siri AI remains a beta feature and uses a waitlist-based activation process.
A camera-based Siri mode extends Visual Intelligence to physical objects and scenes. Apple gives examples such as identifying food, looking up nutritional information, creating Wallet passes and splitting a bill. Apple Cash bill splitting is limited to the United States.
Which iPhones support Siri AI?
Apple lists iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max, iPhone 16 models or later, and iPhone Air for Siri AI. Device, language, Apple Account region and individual feature requirements also apply.
An iPhone can receive iOS 27 without receiving the complete Apple Intelligence feature set. The operating-system update and the AI features have separate hardware requirements, so the model you own matters before you activate anything.

In the United States, the English beta is available on supported hardware. On iPhone, iPad and Apple Watch in the European Union, Apple says Siri AI is unavailable at launch. Apple separately says Mac and Apple Vision Pro users in the EU can access Siri AI when their Apple Account region and language settings meet the requirements.
The most useful Apple Intelligence additions beyond Siri
Siri gets the attention, but the broader update may matter more in daily use. Apple Intelligence now touches several system apps instead of living in one assistant interface.

The Photos changes are particularly practical: Clean Up removes distractions, Extend expands an image and Spatial Reframing adjusts the composition. Safari’s automatic tab organization tackles a different kind of clutter, while Notify Me can watch a webpage for price or availability changes.
Write with Siri is designed for requests that combine several pieces of personal context. Apple’s example asks Siri to draft an email using free Saturdays and gluten-free snack options, illustrating how the assistant can connect a writing task with calendar information and user preferences.
iOS 27 also adds useful changes without the AI features
Not every worthwhile change requires an Apple Intelligence-capable iPhone. iOS 27 also brings system controls and interface adjustments that are separate from the AI rollout.
A hands-on iOS 27 feature tour demonstrates a timer launched from Control Center that appears as a dynamic widget, customizable Lock Screen clock settings, camera-control rearrangement, independent volume controls for alarms and timers, and automatic Safari tab grouping. The Photos editor includes Clean Up, Extend and Reframe tools, while Shortcuts can be created with natural-language instructions.
These changes are useful precisely because they do not all depend on Siri AI. You can reorganize camera controls or separate alarm and system-sound volume settings without turning the update into an AI experiment.
What happens when you enable Apple Intelligence?
Apple says activation is optional. Installing iOS 27 does not by itself require you to join the Siri AI waitlist or download the Siri AI models. To try the beta, open Settings, choose Siri, tap Try Siri AI (Beta), then complete the requested voice enrollment and privacy review.
Apple’s general support documentation lists 7 GB of device storage as the requirement for Apple Intelligence models. That figure is a documented storage requirement, not a universal measurement of every iOS 27 installation. User-reported storage totals vary across devices and software states, so there is no single observed iOS 27 total to apply to every iPhone.
Apple also says users can turn off Apple Intelligence, which removes the on-device models. The control is useful if you decide the storage allocation or the feature set is not worth keeping on your phone.
For U.S. users with an eligible iPhone, iOS 27’s main decision is therefore straightforward: Siri AI is available as an English beta, but the wider Apple Intelligence package and its individual tools remain tied to Apple’s hardware, language and regional requirements.
