Apple Watch Series 12 and Apple Watch Ultra 4 share Apple’s S11 chip, watchOS 27 and opt-in Audio Intelligence, but the audio tools do not follow one single privacy path. Apple says raw audio is not recorded or stored: it enters a protected buffer in the S11 chip’s Secure Exclave and is deleted after processing. Depending on the feature, the watch and paired iPhone can still create derived information, send an acoustic signature to Shazam or send condensed encrypted text to Private Cloud Compute.
The hardware choice remains straightforward. Series 12 starts at $399 in the US and is the more conventional daily smartwatch, while Ultra 4 starts at $799 and adds a larger rugged case, longer rated battery life and outdoor-focused hardware.
Apple Watch Series 12 and Ultra 4: the short version
The core experience is much closer than the price gap suggests. Both watches use the S11 chip, run watchOS 27 and include Apple’s redesigned Health Sensing System. Apple says the system can take background heart-rate readings every five seconds and heart-rate variability (HRV) readings every five minutes.
The practical split is physical and functional:
- Series 12 comes in 42mm and 46mm sizes, with aluminum, titanium and ceramic case options. Apple rates it for up to 24 hours of normal use.
- Ultra 4 has a 49mm titanium case, a brighter display, dual-frequency GPS, satellite communications and support for recreational scuba diving to 40 meters. Its normal-use rating reaches up to 50 hours.
Apple announced both watches on September 9, 2026. Their software experience also depends on the feature: some Audio Intelligence tools are planned for a later beta rollout rather than being available as a single finished package.
What both watches add: S11, denser sensing and Readiness
The shared upgrade is not just a new processor name. Apple says the Health Sensing System is redesigned to collect background data more frequently, with heart-rate readings every five seconds and HRV readings every five minutes.
Both watches also include Readiness, a score from 0 to 10. It combines recent activity, training load, vital signs and sleep to provide an estimate of how ready you may be for the day ahead. Think of it as a single dashboard for several kinds of information that previously lived in separate health and fitness views.
A Readiness number is an interpretation of recent data, not a medical diagnosis or a promise that a workout will go well. Apple also describes the new sensing system as the most accurate heart-rate sensing in a wearable. That is a manufacturer claim, not an independent result.
Both models include watchOS 27 features such as Siri AI, Siri Recap, Live Rewind, Sound Recognition and Music Recognition with Shazam. Live Rewind and Siri Recap are planned as beta releases later in 2026, starting in English.
Audio Intelligence is useful—and its privacy story is feature-specific
Audio Intelligence is Apple’s feature family for sound detection, music identification, speech recovery and conversation summaries on Apple Watch Series 12 and Apple Watch Ultra 4. All four named functions are opt-in:
- Sound Recognition detects sirens, alarms and doorbells, including when the iPhone is not nearby.
- Music Recognition with Shazam identifies background music and displays the title and artist in Smart Stack.
- Live Rewind recalls up to 15 seconds of recent speech as a text snippet after a deliberate double press of the Digital Crown.
- Siri Recap creates high-level AI-generated conversation summaries rather than a complete transcript.
Does Apple Watch Audio Intelligence record conversations? Apple says these functions do not create or store audio recordings. Raw audio enters a protected buffer inside the S11 chip’s Secure Exclave and is immediately deleted after processing. Apple also says raw audio is inaccessible to the operating system, apps, the user and Apple.
That does not mean every derived result stays on the watch. Sound Recognition and Live Rewind process information across the Apple Watch and paired iPhone. Music Recognition sends Shazam an acoustic signature rather than the original audio; Apple says the signature cannot be reversed into the source recording. Siri Recap sends condensed encrypted transcript text to Private Cloud Compute, Apple’s cloud processing environment, to generate a high-level summary.
So the useful shorthand is precise: Apple says raw audio recordings are not created or stored, while each feature can produce a different derived output and use a different processing route.

What Live Rewind and Siri Recap retain
Live Rewind requires a deliberate double press of the Digital Crown. It does not continue transcribing in the background after that action. An unsaved text snippet disappears approximately 30 seconds after the display dims.
How much speech can Live Rewind recover? It can show up to 15 seconds of recent speech as text. Apple says the watch emits an audible chime and displays a full-screen animation with a microphone indicator when Live Rewind is activated, including when the watch is silent or headphones are connected.
Siri Recap produces a summary rather than a word-for-word transcript. Apple says the condensed text sent for summarization is designed to be less than half the length of the original transcript. Unsaved Siri Recap summaries auto-delete after seven days. Saved summaries and Live Rewind snippets can sync through iCloud with end-to-end encryption when iCloud, two-factor authentication and a device passcode are enabled.
Audio Intelligence does not identify or attribute speech to individual speakers.
Series 12: the mainstream choice
Series 12 is the easier fit for a typical Apple Watch routine: notifications, sleep tracking, workouts, heart-rate monitoring and everyday health data in a smaller range of case sizes.
The 42mm and 46mm cases are available in aluminum, titanium or ceramic. Apple brings back ceramic in Pearl White and Night Blue, alongside aluminum and titanium finishes. The watch has an Always-On Retina LTPO3 OLED display with wide-angle OLED technology and brightness of up to 2,000 nits.
Its health feature set includes Readiness, sleep scoring, HRV, ECG, blood oxygen, hypertension notifications, sleep-apnea notifications and cycle tracking. These are product features, not a substitute for medical advice or clinical evaluation.
Battery life is the main compromise. Apple rates Series 12 for up to 24 hours of normal use and up to 38 hours in Low Power Mode. That covers a normal day on Apple’s rating, while readers who regularly spend long periods away from a charger should look closely at Ultra 4’s endurance figures.
Ultra 4: where the extra size and cost go
Ultra 4 is not simply a Series 12 with a larger screen. Its 49mm aerospace-grade titanium case, sapphire crystal, WR100 water resistance, satellite communications and precision dual-frequency GPS are aimed at outdoor use.
Apple rates it for recreational scuba diving to 40 meters and gives it dedicated workout modes. Standard workout tracking is rated for up to 18 hours, while Max Extended Workout tracking reaches up to 45 hours. In normal use, the headline figure is up to 50 hours; Low Power Mode extends that to up to 84 hours.
The display reaches up to 3,000 nits, compared with up to 2,000 nits for Series 12. The extra brightness, larger case and rugged construction suit situations where quick readability and longer tracking matter.
The trade-off is equally obvious: a 49mm watch is physically larger, and the $799 starting price is twice the Series 12’s $399 starting price. If your day consists mostly of office hours, errands, sleep tracking and ordinary workouts, Ultra 4’s specialized hardware may spend a lot of time waiting for an adventure that never arrives.

Both watches deliver the shared health and software platform. Ultra 4 adds hardware for endurance, navigation, visibility and water use, while Series 12 offers more compact case options and a lower starting price.
Availability, language and compatible hardware
Live Rewind and Siri Recap are scheduled as beta features later in 2026, initially in English. In the United States, the rollout requires a supported Apple Watch and iPhone.
Audio Intelligence supports Apple Watch Series 12 and Apple Watch Ultra 4. Sound Recognition and Music Recognition require an iPhone 11 or later, or an iPhone SE (2nd generation or later), with iOS 27.
Live Rewind and Siri Recap require a newer supported iPhone, including iPhone 16 models and later listed models such as iPhone 17, iPhone 17e, iPhone Air, iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max and iPhone Duo.
The initial language matters if you are considering these features specifically for speech recovery or summaries: Live Rewind and Siri Recap start with English, with more languages planned.

The decisive question is whether Ultra 4’s extra battery, navigation, diving and outdoor hardware solve a problem you actually have. If they do not, Series 12 keeps the shared health platform, software features and Audio Intelligence support while asking less of your wrist and your wallet.
