AU Optronics (AUO) approved the sale of its Taichung Plant Phase II facilities and related infrastructure to Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) for NT$38.8 billion, excluding taxes, on October 29, 2026. The reported package includes buildings, cleanrooms and supporting equipment. The October 29–30 accounts describe board approval, with administrative steps and handover still to follow.
What the Taichung sale includes
The site in Taichung reportedly covers about 429,000 square meters of registered area, roughly 4.62 million square feet. It has one Gen 5 and one Gen 7.5 display line, according to reporting by TrendForce. Those are existing display lines included in the facility sale.
AUO expects an estimated disposal gain of about NT$18.5 billion, also reported by TrendForce. That accounting gain is separate from the NT$38.8 billion sale consideration.
TSMC’s stated purpose for the site
TSMC’s stated purpose, as reported by Yonhap News Agency, is to support its operations and production needs. The reported statement describes a broad operational role for the site.
How the separate Quanta proposal differs
AUO also ended a proposed NT$19.7 billion sale of its Huaya facility to Quanta Computer. Reports said the parties could not agree on the facility’s usage specifications and delivery schedule. Huaya was a separate transaction from the approved Taichung sale to TSMC.
