Long before the the MP3 format and other tools made their appearance, music enthusiasts spent hours in front of their Amiga systems, squeezing every drop out of their favorite trackers. Bassoon Tracker is a massive dose of nostalgia and an online platform at the same time, where you can listen and edit all the .MOD and .XM files you have at hand. It supports up to 32 channels, exports to WAV or MP3, and is open source.
Reliving the Good Old Days
Praying beside the dial-up modem for a good connection, logging into a BBS at one in the morning (avoiding parents' shouts and peak-rate hours), searching for the latest .MOD files, downloading everything, copying the contents onto floppy disks, and distributing the loot. It was an era that brought out the best in us, and beyond the technical limitations, we can't help but remember it fondly. Fortunately, this hasn't completely disappeared. The demoscene movement still produces true wonders, and some artists even work with the original hardware. Getting a Commodore Amiga in good condition is becoming increasingly difficult, but today we came across something that comes pretty close, and the best part is we don't need to download anything: Bassoon Tracker.
How Bassoon Tracker Works
If you have experience with ProTracker, NoiseTracker, or FastTracker, you'll feel right at home. Otherwise, Bassoon Tracker will let you create music in real time by combining notes, effects, and samples across different channels. If that sounds a bit intimidating, don't worry. The tracker also enables loading and playing .MOD and .XM files, plus it offers some must-see demos, among which 'Space Debris' by Markus Kaarlonen (the same from Poets of the Fall) stands out. Another possibility within Bassoon Tracker's reach is converting MOD and XM files to more 'familiar' formats, so to speak, like WAV and MP3, but that function doesn't work well at the moment (it only saves a 1 KB 'dummy').
Bassoon Tracker is open source, was made in JavaScript (its only requirement is a browser compatible with WebAudio), supports up to 32 channels, and we can associate a Dropbox account to read our music from there. A highly recommended web app, even if the nostalgia factor doesn't interest you.
