Do you remember Windows 95? If you're too young, I'm guessing your answer is no, but it's not that hard to find the operating system as an app or as an online service.
Windows 95 is already more than a quarter of a century old, and although it may seem unbelievable, it is still alive. Modern versions of Windows still retain elements that date back to that operating system, and those users with a certain interest in retro games have not hesitated to maintain special installations, whether virtual or on the metal.
To all that are added isolated projects on the Web that modify Windows 95, or use it as a source of inspiration to create something different. Windows 96 points in that direction. Its name suggests that it is a parody, and its hidden jokes definitely justify that classification, but it has several elements that work as if it were a real operating system.

What can we say? It looks like Windows 95, behaves like Windows 95, and has several of the whims of Windows 95, but it also adopts 'concepts' from its bigger siblings. For example, Windows 95 didn't use activation systems, but if you try to run that tool in Windows 96... the laughter will be inevitable.
Something similar happens with the PC Health Check application. If you're up to date with everything that has happened with Windows 11 and its hardware compatibility, you'll see that the imminent release of 'Windows 97' has the same problems. If you try to get more information about that 'update', the program will open a copy of the classic Internet Exploder, the integrated browser in Windows 96.
This is just the tip of the iceberg as far as jokes go, but Windows 96 comes with several legit tools, including a package manager, a copy of the excellent Bassoon Tracker, DosBox, and an NES emulator. Logically, among the available packages we find a copy of the Doom shareware.
In summary, Windows 96 is weird, funny, and entertaining at the same time. You can install programs and change its appearance, but most likely it will steal a smile or two. Enjoy!
