The search for the best horror movie can lead to heated arguments, comparisons across decades, conflicts between subgenres, and much more. However, the folks at Broadband Choices decided to explore this complex question by bringing a bit of science to the table. With the help of 50 participants and more than 120 hours of video, they compiled a list of the best horror movies, using heart rate as the main reference.
A Matter of Heart Rate
Think of the horror movie that scared you the most. The one that undoubtedly made you jump out of your chair, or forced you to take a five-minute break. Got it? Remember that scene? Now, if you decide to share it with someone, it's likely they'll tell you you're wrong, and that the scariest movie is a completely different one. That's when the endless comparisons, doubts, and arguments begin.
So how do we resolve the underlying question? Is it easier to apply an 'umbrella term' and talk about the best horror movies, or is there a specific title that always deserves to be highlighted? At Broadband Choices they decided to follow the first route, with an extra twist: applying science. Starting from a series of recommendations on Reddit, the research team gathered 50 participants to watch more than 120 hours of video each with Surround 5.1 sound, connected to a heart rate monitor.
The Top 35, According to the Data
The study adopts four general parameters: resting heart rate, average heart rate during the film, the difference between the two, and the highest peak associated with classic jump scares. Final positions are based on average heart rate, and with a record of 86 beats per minute, first place goes to Sinister, a 2012 film starring Ethan Hawke. Second place went to Insidious, the film that started the franchise of the same name in 2010, and which could potentially have a crossover with Sinister in the future. The study rounds out its podium by placing The Conjuring in third place. As the starting point for the Conjuring universe (which includes the Annabelle series, The Nun, and several shorts), the film is inspired by paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren, and received a good reception from the public.
