David Ayer's Experience in the Genre
There is no doubt that David Ayer has experience in the genre. His screenplay for Training Day (2001), about a corrupt LAPD officer played by Denzel Washington, led Ayer to get offers to direct (and an Oscar for Best Actor for Washington). Then, when David directed End of Watch (2012), a drama focused on the daily work of two LAPD officers, he received the best positive reviews of his career. For Bright, set in a real world where humans and magical creatures live together, the director seeks to merge the police and fantasy genres to tell urban stories with the striking visuals that helped Suicide Squad (2016) earn over $745 million at the worldwide box office.
In fact, Bright stars Will Smith, the Suicide Squad star, who takes the role of an officer in the Los Angeles police department whose partner is an orc cop, played by Joel Edgerton. The rest of the cast includes Noomi Rapace, Lucy Fry, Edgar Ramírez, Happy Anderson, Kenneth Choi, and Ike Barinholtz. Directed by David Ayer (Suicide Squad) and written by Max Landis (Chronicle), Bright will premiere on Netflix on December 22, 2017.
