The history of the Commodore 64 is far from over. With 40 years of documentation, a wide range of hacks, mods, reproduction units, and emulators, it's easy to enter the Commodore universe and its games. However, that also means facing its main limitations, starting with the operating system. The official BASIC environment doesn't have much to offer against modern demands, and with that in mind, programmer Gregory Naçu decided to create a new operating system called C64OS.
Happy birthday, Commodore 64! This unforgettable machine arrived on shelves in August 1982 and became "the first one" for millions of families around the globe. In fact, it was so popular that it accompanied the company until its end in May 1994, and today we can talk about a true "cult computer". A simple YouTube search will show you everything you need to know about modern reproductions, mods, and advanced repairs (PLA, VIC, SID, memory modules, etc.), but today we're going to explore the possibility of a different operating system.
The idea is not exactly new: Some of our readers might remember GEOS, developed by Berkeley Softworks in 1986, and there are also more specialized options like Contiki, but programmer Gregory Naçu believes he can offer a modern alternative without sacrificing speed or resorting to extreme hacks. The result is C64OS, currently in beta and very close to its final version.
Can a Commodore 64 be modernized? Meet C64OS
The video shows a preliminary version of the operating system, but it's more than enough to study its appearance and general functioning. Unlike other projects like GEOS, C64OS's graphical mode respects the original conditions: 320 x 200 pixels, 16-color palette, and the native character map. Maybe it's not the most attractive combination in the world, but considering performance and memory usage parameters, it's a smart strategy.
The interface supports selection and drag, multiple desktops, collapsible menus, split screen, real-time available memory reporting, custom themes (in addition to light and dark), and of course, applications. File manager, image gallery, calculator, calendar, and chess are part of the initial selection.
Now, what exactly is needed to run C64OS? The operating system uses some functions of the original kernel (called "kernal" in the Commodore universe), and Gregory recommends installing an optimized variant like JiffyDOS. On the hardware side, C64OS will be distributed on an SD card, which means we need to connect an accessory similar to SD2IEC. However, enthusiasts can use the VICE emulator and try it there.
