CCleaner needs no introduction. For years it has been one of the main cleaners for Windows, but Piriform also works on a modern browser: CCleaner Browser. Based on the Chromium codebase, this browser includes an entire section dedicated to security and privacy, without sacrificing compatibility or support for extensions.
Chromium's open source profile has allowed many developers to create their own vision of a web browser. At the same time, this has led to a certain saturation in the market, making the search for alternative browsers more complicated than it should be. Users prefer not to move from their current choice amid so much noise, and end up losing sight of some interesting options.
Determined to escape that trap, we arrive at the gates of CCleaner Browser. As its name suggests, it is the browser developed by Piriform/Avast, which often appears as a secondary offer in CCleaner installation. This browser is based on one of the most recent builds of Chromium, but distances itself from Google with a greater focus on security and privacy.
What Makes CCleaner Browser Different?
Upon completing installation, CCleaner Browser will ask the user to configure certain elements to their liking, such as the internal search engine (Google by default), ad blocking (remember to make an exception for NeoTeo!), and importing bookmarks saved in other browsers. The first thing that stands out is the so-called Security and Privacy Center, where you can adjust aspects of anti-phishing, digital signature recognition and tracking, enable the password manager and extension protection (more on that below), and access the "privacy cleaner" to delete history.
What about extensions? CCleaner Browser has its own "add-on store" with a very limited number of options. However, that own store invites us to pass through the Chrome Web Store to download everything we need. If we activate Extension Protection, CCleaner Browser will present a warning before allowing installation using other stores, but we have not detected compatibility conflicts.
In summary, the advanced user will find no extraordinary reasons to use CCleaner Browser, but if you need to install a web browser on a computer for someone without much security knowledge and the built-in version of Edge is not an option (for whatever reason), you might want to consider this Chromium variant.
